May 19, 1862 – Lincoln Learns of Occupation of Norfolk

The President, on Tuesday evening, amused his Senatorial visitors by telling them the way in which the news of our occupation of Norfolk was received. The President was just getting into bed when Mr. Chase, with Gen. Wool in full regimentals, burst into the room, which he occupied at Fortress Monroe, with the gladsome intelligence. Mr. Stanton presently appeared in his wrapper and slippers, and rushed into Wool’s arms for long and fond embrace.
