May 28, 1862 – New Regiments

The 17th regiment, formerly the 7th N. C. volunteers, has been re-organized at Camp Mangum, by the election of Col. William F. Martin, Colonel, (its former Colonel who was captured at Hatteras;) Capt J. C. Lamb, Lieut. Colonel and Capt. Thos. H. Sharpe, Major.

The 54th regiment was organized on the 17th by the election of John Wimbish of Granville, Colonel J. S. C. McDowell of Burke, Lieut. Colonel and K. M. Murchison of Cumberland, Major.
