July 8, 1862 – Attempted Vandalism

The defacing of the Inscription upon the marble monument to the memory of Jackson, on the Court Square, Memphis, Tenn., was done by an Arkansas Lieutenant. He deemed the immortal words, “The Federal Union must and shall be preserved,” an indignity to Southern Rights; and borrowing a mallet and chisel, attempted to obliterate them. But the stone was hard, and the letters cut In, Instead of raised, so he found it slow work. He had only defaced the word “Federal,” without rendering it illegible, when Provost Marshal McKissock put a stop to the vandalism.
