Two to 3-Inch Rainfall Within Few Hours—Strong Wind in Some Localities

Waterville, Me., July 22—(AP)—Following several hours of heavy rain, the most severe thunderstorm of the season occurred here tonight, causing such a flood of water that the city sewers were overloaded and some of the store basements filled to a depth of several feet, damaging considerable stocks. Several hens were drowned in the western part of the city. Rainfall of 2.13 inches in three hours broke all local records.
Big Booth Carried Off
Old Orchard, Me., July 22— (AP)—A ten by forty foot amusement booth on the ocean pier here was picked up and hurled bodily into the water by the high wind during a severe thunderstorm today. Jack Bennett, the owner, was not in the booth at the time. His stock of curios, valued at several hundred dollars, was destroyed.
Series of Electrical Storms
Manchester, N. H., July 22—(AP)—One man was seriously hurt, houses, barns and factories were struck by lightning, trees were uprooted and roofs torn from their fastenings in various sections of the state today when a terrific electrical storm reached cyclonic proportions.
Landslide in Vermont
Rutland, Vt„ July 22—(AP)—During a rainstorm today, when 1.50 inches cf water fell in five hours, a landslide occurred on the mountains of Mount Tabor, carrying with it forest trees over a space fifteen rods wide and a mile long. The debris reached to a road near Weston and blocked it. The damage to timber will be hundreds of dollars.
Three Inch Rainfall
Athol, Mass., July 22—(AP)—Three inches of rain which fell within three hours this afternoon caused extensive damage to streets and retaining walls throughout the town. The railroad tracks were washed out near Royalston and trains delayed two hours.
Great Damage to Crops
Boston July 22—(AP)—A wide spread electrical storm which burst on New England this evening did great damage to crops, wrecked buildings and uprooted orchards and shade trees, while the rain which preceded and accompanied it caused complete cessation of athletic events.
Although in several localities the storm developed small cyclones which flattened buildings few persons were Injured.
Boston received a drenching accompanied by lightning but no serious damage was reported in the vicinity. President Coolidge and his party on the Mayflower experienced rough weather on their trip to Pemberton and newspapermen who were following in an open boat were forced to bail their boat. The storm was most severe in north west Massachusetts where widespread destruction was reported.
Damage in Connecticut
New Haven, Conn., July 22—(AP)—Connecticut was drenched by an intensive, rainstorm this afternoon which, accompanied in places by lightning and high winds, did considerable damage to crops and buildings. In many districts the telephone service was interrupted and inter-urban trolley cars were stalled in many places.
Trail of Damage In Western Mass.
Springfield, Mass., July 22.— (AP)—Widespread crop damage, barns torn from their foundations by the high winds, several flrflsjwid thousands of dollars damage to highways and estates followed in the wake of torrential rains and a severe thunderstorm which swept western Massachusetts today. While the whole area was visited by heavy rains, the northwestern section of the state suffered most severely.
