July 31, 1862 – Southern Union Regiments

A regiment of Union men of North Alabama is organizing in General Buell’s army, and will soon be full and equipped for service under the Stars and Stripes. A regiment composed of Arkansas men is already organized and attached to the army of Gen. Curtis. Virginia, Kentucky, Missouri and Tennessee each have large forces in the Union Service. A good many men have been recruited in North Carolina and some in Florida and Louisiana. Every State of the Union now has troops in the Federal service except South Carolina, Georgia, Mississippi and Texas. The latter State would furnish many regiments, if the Government would once make strong demonstration in its borders and secure them protection. This, we trust, will be done before great while.
