Break Alien Smuggling Ring

CHIEF JAILED AND GANG HALTED

Captain Hanson Says “All Is Tight” in Del Rio District.

A large smuggling ring with headquarters at Monterey, and operating solely for the purpose of smuggling aliens into this country, is believed to have been broken up with the arrest at Del Rio of a man who is believed to be the head of the smugglers, according to Captain W. H. Hanson, head of the immigration forces of this district, who returned from Del Rio Saturday.

With the co-operation and in company with Felix Salinas, inspector of immigration in Nuevo Laredo, Captain Hanson made a thorough inspection of border immigration work in the vicinity of Del Rio and Eagle Pass.

ARREST 12 ALIENS.

It was while he was on the border that the smuggler and his assistant were arrested.

The smuggler chief, Captain Hanson said, is believed to be the directing head of the Monterey smuggling gang which has been slipping aliens into this country for a long time. Many aliens are now assembled in Monterey he said, waiting to be brought into this country by the organization.

Twelve aliens who had been smuggled into this country were, also arrested near Del Rio.

They included Italians, three Germans, two Greeks, and two Poles. One of the aliens escaped from the officers while he was being taken to Del Rio and fled into a canyon.

The officers knew the gorge was a blind canyon, with only the one entrance, so they pitched camp there and waited.

Three days later the alien, nearly starved and wild, appeared.

He was subdued after a hard fight.

“ALL IS TIGHT.”

“All is tight along the Rio Grande today.” Captain Hanson said.

“That is, speaking from a smuggling viewpoint and of the Del Rio territory.

“I believe that smugglers and undesirable aliens will find it almost impossible to come across the border now.

“We are receiving excellent co-operation from the Mexican authorities, and Mr. Salinas, who worked with me while I was there, showed a desire to co-operate in every way possible.

“All roads from Monterey are being watched, and I feel confident the aliens congregated there will fall into the net if they try to cross to this side.”
