SWAMPSCOTT, Aug. 22.—President Coolidge has made public a letter which recently received from William A. Aiken, a “Green Mountain boy” who voted for Lincoln and now wants to vote for President Coolidge for another term.
This letter and the President’s reply, follow;
“Dear Mr. President:
“The writer, a ‘Green Mountain boy’ of A. D. 1833, takes this method of ‘paying his respects’ to his chosen President whom he hopes (D. V.) to vote for once more.
“His first vote was cast for Abraham Lincoln, whose nomination in the Chicago ‘wigwam’ he witnessed.
LAUDS FIRST LADY
“During Lincoln’s presidency the writer held eight interesting interviews with him, as military representative of the ‘war governor’ of Connecticut, W. A. Buckingham.
“Writer was present in same capacity, in the east room of the White House, at Lincoln’s funeral.
“Writer cannot close this tribute of respect without including Mrs. Coolidge, one of the most acceptable mistresses of the White House, where he was often a guest, during the incumbency of his very dear aunt, Mrs. Franklin Pierce.
“This is writen from the summer residence of my nephew, Alfred L. Ripley, president. Merchants National Bank, Boston, 127 Front street, Marblehead, in near view of the beautiful and historic ‘Mayflower.’
COOLIDGE REPLIES
“My Dear Mr. Aiken:
“I have been most pleased to receive your letter, and am glad of the opportunity to reciprocate the generous expression of good wishes which you send to Mrs. Coolidge and myself.
“Your intimate experience with and knowledge of the public life of the country through the larger part of a century, must have been a great gratification to you, and in congratulating you I have to express the earnest hope that you may continue your privileges of observation and study for many more years.”
