June 4, 1863 – Georgia And The Confederate Bonds

From the Rome (Ga.) Southerner.

The refusal of the Legislature to indorse Georgia’s share of the bonds will travel with the speed of electricity to the North, and from thence it will be carried on the wings of the wind throughout the civilized world. Will not our enemies consider this action of the Legislature the greatest victory for LINCOLN of the war? Can any more loans be negotiated in England and France, when these two great Powers are informed that Georgia is distrustful of the Confederate credit?

We hear and have heard for months that Illinois is opposed to the war, and why is it? Because she repudiates LINCOLN’s war debt. Will not Georgia be put down as opposed to the war for the reason that she opposes the war debt of President DAVIS? The Truth is, Georgia has been in the background ever since the commencement of the war. Instead of being leader, she has been lead. Her people are patriotic. At the first tap of the drum, her gallant sons rushed forward to meet the advancing foe. But the perversness of her rulers has kept her in the shade when she should have been in the front.
