June 29, 1863 – Women Whiskey Smugglers

Picture of two Civil War soldiers posing with drinks.

On Saturday the guard at the Aqueduct Bridge arrested three women, who, upon being searched by a female, it was found had secreted under their clothing twenty-three canteens, fifteen bottles, and one stone jug of whiskey. These women, it is said, get passes at Alexandria to visit sick friends, and in this illicit manner manage to make about $75 per trip. They had already made three.
