Richmond papers announce the death of Col. Robert G. Shaw, of the fifty-fourth (colored) regiment of Massachusetts, at the assault on Fort Wagner, Charleston harbor, on the 18th inst. The report needs
confirmation. Col. Shaw was the son of Francis Shaw of Boston, and grandson of the well known merchant whose name he bore. He enlisted at the beginning of the war, and served as first lieutenant in the second Massachusetts regiment through all the battles in which that regiment took part. The profound and friendly interest which he took in the organization of colored troops, united with his great merit as a soldier, designated him as a fit person to command the first of the new regiments raised in his native state. If the report of his death is true his regiment will have lost an able commander and a devoted friend, while the state will mourn the loss of another of her gifted sons.
