The German submarine U570, captured in August 1941, has since been carrying out patrols under the White Ensign, manned by a specially selected and specially trained crew of the Royal Navy’s submarine service. The particular object of her patrols was to seek out, and, if possible, destroy craft of her own kind.
The U570 was captured after a depth charge attack by a Hudson aircraft of Coastal Command patrolling from Iceland, which resulted in the enemy submarine showing a white flag, which was found to be the captain’s shirt. The vessel was renamed H.M. submarine Graph, and Lieut. P. B. Marriott, R.N., was appointed in command.
On her first patrol the Graph torpedoed and destroyed another U-boat.
