THE use of wine by the firemen to replace the exhausted water supply saved the old Spanish town of Sonoma, California, from destruction last evening. The town is built mostly of wood, and is the centre of the Calefornian vine district, and storage centre for wines. After the fire broke out it spread rapidly, and the water supply, which was of a primitive nature, gave out. The firemen tipped the great tanks of new grape juice and this quenched the flames after damage to the extent of £16,000 had been done.
