May 20, 1862 – Speech of Gen. Sigel

The Union ladies of St. Louis having presented General Sigel with a silver cup recently, that officer returned his thanks to the fair donors in the following words :

“I was not born in this country, but here a stranger as did your ancestors, the Huguenots, the Puritans, and the companions of William Penn. But I assure you that my heart and soul are with this Republic. I am bound to it by every act of my life, for the principles which give strength to your Government are mine ; for the triumph of these principles I have fought ever since I have been capable of thinking. I am attached to the sacred soil of Missouri by the memory of those whom I have seen to fall before my eyes in defence of the Government and the maintenance of the Union. They offered themselves as a sacrifice for the star spangled banner and my heart shall ever cherish them.’
