May 29, 1862 – Sword Presentation

On Friday afternoon there was quite a pleasant episode at the encampment of the Second Delaware State volunteers, know as Fort Marshal, in Baltimore, which, for the time being, went far to relieve the dull monotony of an inactive camp life. The colonel of the regiment, H. W. Wharton, was agreeably surprised by being the recipient of a magnificent field officer’s sword, sash and belt, presented by Capt. Joseph M. Barr, on the part of the field and staff officers of the regiment. The mournings of the scabbard and sword handle are gold, and there is also emblazoned upon them the coat of arms of the State of Delaware, together with the inscription “Prevented to Col. H. W. Wharton, by the field and staff officers of the Second Delaware State Volunteer”— Republican.
