June 17, 1862 – Release of Mrs. Lee

The wife of Gen. Robert E. Lee, who has been for some time past under guard in the house where she was found upon the arrival of the Federal troops, in the neighborhood of Hanover, has been released, and sent over the lines to rejoin her husband. She has been closely confined, and no communication has been allowed with her or her family. She was placed in charge of a guard of cavalry, and in a close carriage, with her two daughters, crossed the lines near Meadow s Bridge.
