Newark, N. J., Aug. 16—Black-shirted Fascisti and members of the Italian socialist labor party clashed for the second time within the past few weeks in Newark today and when the smoke of battle had cleared it was found that six men had suffered bullet or stab wounds.
The clash followed an encounter at Laurel Garden In Springfield avenue where the Socialists had called a meeting and to which the members of the New York branch of the fascisti society had been invited.
For more than an hour police reserves from six precincts wielded night sticks and pistol butts to restore order. When quiet prevailed the police had one prisoner, Frank Catalano, suffering from a stab wound; six razors, a stilletto and two jack knives.
Police investigation tonight reveals that Catalano, who lives in Irvington, N. J„ had obtained a permit to hold the mass meeting. He and Count Ignatius Edward De Revel, president of the National Fascisti League, a body of the New York members arrived in Newark early today to join their comrades here for a visit to Laurel Garden.
As the visitors entered the building the communists attacked them. The first pistol shot fired passed through the arm of De Revel and was followed by the reports of many others.
Razors and knives then were brought into play. Many of the more than 250 labor party members in the place did not join in the affray and escaped from the hall by doors and windows.
Detectives detailed to preserve order at the meeting here were unable to cope with the situation. Police headquarters was asked for help and responded by sending reserves out from six precincts.
