September 7, 1862 – Col. James Cantwell has Fallen

Among those killed. Col. Jas. Cantwell, of the 82nd. This will be a heavy stroke upon his devoted family, and will be much lamented by his many warm friends in this county and other portions of the State. No braver man lived; fear was no part of his composition, his heart always in the right place, and if he had a fault it was in being too self-sacrificing to his friends.

Col. Cantwell was a military man by nature, and held one of the highest military posts in this State before the rebellion. A few years since be was elected to the State Senate from this senatorial district, and was one of the most popular and active members of that body. As Senator, he made many warm friends throughout the State, who will lament his death. We have not learned the particulars of his fall from his known bravery, it was doubtless in the front of the battle.—Mansfield Shield and Banner.
