New York, July 3.—Terrific heat coupled with oppressive humidity, Sunday, caused several heat prostrations and drove the greater part of the city’s population to the beaches. The weather bureau reported a temperature of 91 degrees while the humidity hovered between 50 and 55.
Slayer Fined For Executing Individual With Human Traits
EVANSTON, Ill., July 1.—When a parrot teaches itself to swear it becomes an Individual with human traits instead of just a parrot. This is the decision of Justice of the Peace H. G. Williams.
Rutheda, the parrot of Mrs. Bertha Flugge, “was the purest and most clean-minded thing I ever saw” before it flew away from her, according to Mrs. Flugge.
Gregg Served Notice on Wild West Showman
Norris B. Gregg, Director of Admissions and Concessions of the World’s Fair, served notice yesterday upon Colonel Cummins of the Cummins Wild West Show that Zach Mulhall must not again appear in that show on the Pike.
A little fight occurred near Seneca Mill, which is on the Maryland side of the Potomac, some 28 miles above Washington. Lt. Col. Everett in command of three companies of District volunteers, about 200 men, being a detachment of Col. Stone’s column, who started in canal boats from Georgetown, and were obliged to leave them a few miles up, and march, the Confederates having cut the dam.
Parade a Feature of Barnum & Bailey Exhibition
The circus parade is evidently here to stay. A few years ago a couple of the big shows thought they could draw the crowds to their tents without sending their glittering wagons, animals, clowns and steam calliope through the streets, but apparently they found that the plan was not a success. They are all back with the morning procession again, much to the joy of the small boy and his parents. too.
We are requested to call attention to the following regulation of the Board of Managers, in regard to the Fair to be had on the 14th inst. The Society will meet on Tuesday; the annual address will be delivered on the evening of that day, at the Supreme Court Room, at half past seven o’clock; the Fair will be held on Wednesday, the 14th, opening at 12 o’clock noon, in the Court room.
