Mercury to Drop to 7 Above Zero

Winter’s Record to Be Set Tonight—Relief Next Week Indicated.

A cold wave sweeping in from the West put an end today to the comparatively balmy weather the Capital has been enjoying for the past week and, if the weather man’s predictions are borne out, will drive the mercury down to the seven-degree point tonight, a new low record for this Winter.

The only solace the Weather Bureau had to hold out against a prospect of two or three days of frigid temperature was that it sees no prospect of snow accompanying it. While the thermometer is flirting with the zero point tonight the sky will be cloudy and probably will continue that way tomorrow.

New England Cities Will Be Linked by Air Route

Operating Base Already Established at Portland and Boston—Plan System of Relay Planes—Tech Professor Sees Big Increase in Commercial Flying During Coming Year

Boston, Jan. 19.—(AP)—Announcement that the leading cities of New England will be linked in a air route next summer was made today at a joint meeting of the Aero Club of New England and the Boston chapter of the National Aeronautic Association. Operating centers already have been established in Boston and Portland, Maine, it was said, and negotiations are under way for connections at Hartford, Conn.

Former Grecian Monarch May Locate in Florida

New York, Jan. 12.—(AP)—George II, once king of Greece, who long has been the center of momentous poiiticat intrigues in the Balkans, may seek a haven of refuse in the United States.

For some time he has been considering buying land and building a residence for himself at the Floranda Club, north of Fort Lauderdale, on the east coast of Florida. He will not become a permanent resident, friends here say, but will use the home as a winter residence. Last night Prince Paul, his brother, who is now in Chicago, confirmed news of King George’s plans and intimated that the royal exile is tired of petty Balkan politics and would be glad to find escape from them in America.

Number of Dead Still Unknown in Europe Floods

Situation Holds Critical In Transylvania, Eastern Hungary and Rumania—Damage is Widespread With Demoralization of Communication—Water Receding in Belgium, Holland, and Germany—Details of Suffering Slowly Reaching Big Centers

Paris, Jan. 4—(AP)—Transylvania, eastern Hungary and Rumania present the most critical situation in a Europe which is slowly emerging from one of the worst floods in its history.

The number of dead in these countries and the amount of damage inflicted probably will not be known for several days, perhaps weeks, on account of the demoralization of communications and the fact that vast areas of territory are likely to remain under water for some time. But is is certain that there will be a tremendous death toil and huge financial loss.

Premier Mussolini Delivers Stirring Address Before Fascist Party Following His Escape Yesterday From Assassination

ROME, April 8.—(AP) Benito Mussolini, premier of Italy having escaped assassination at the hands of a woman, is determined to fight for the principles for which he stands throughout the world.

“I have chosen as the slogan of my life, ‘live in danger’ and I say as an old fighter: ‘when I advance follow me; when I retreat, kill me; should I die, avenge me.’ “

Censorship of Fascists Fails to Halt Leaks

ROME —In spite of Fascist censorship, news of internal troubles leaks out of Italy and indicates that Dictator Mussolini looks into a dark future and prepares for it.

The Italian lira continues to lose in the race against the British pound and the American dollar. Unemployment is on the increase at an alarming rate, and nothing is being done to take care of the jobless.

The Italian middle class, after trusting to Mussolini’s loud prophecies of victory in “the battle of the lira,” is beginning to understand that Mussolini’s victory means a loss of its own savings. And no Fascist button on the lapel of the middle class coat can reconcile the loser.

The Fascist Aristocracy

The autocracy of Mussolini moves along unimpeded on the enthusiastic support of the Italian masses. The women, who were given the vote in municipal elections some months ago, find the right amounting to nothing, as the local governments for which they were to vote are now appointed by Mussolini.

The abolition of popular elections has raised the question of providing properly trained administrators for the dictatorship. Fascist intellectuals propose a special training school for a governmental aristocracy, to which youths shall be sent who have been adjudged by the Duce from among candidates-suggested by the officers of the Fascist militia to be of proper character to exercise authority as he may see fit to permit to others besides himself. By this method of “investure from above” it is hoped to make eternal the blessing of a people’s forgetting to govern itself. These future masters of the state are to be instructed in “the analysis of political phenomena, the science of organization, and Roman and Italian history with special attention to the dictatorial periods,” and are to be tried in minor administrative posts.
