Announce Date Of Hopi Snake Dance Aug. 25th

Announcement of the date of one of the three Hopi Snake Dances, to be held this year north of Winslow, was brought here this week by Joe Secakuku (Chief Yellowfeet). The dance, in which Chief Yellowfeet will take part, is to be held at Shipaulavi, 75 miles north of Winslow by way of the Painted Desert and Oraibi, and will take place on August 25th. As 1926 ends in an even number there will be three dances held this year. On years ending in odd numbers only two dances are held. The other two dances of 1926 will be held during August at Toreva and Hotevilla villages, and dates will be announced later.

Boy Scouts To Clean Winslow Landing Field

Following completion of leveling and grading the runways of Winslow’s new municipal landing field, which will be finished some time this week, the Boy Scouts, upholding their creed of “doing a good turn daily” will turn out Saturday and start work of clearing the entire field of old tin cans which have been dumped on the grounds in days gone by, so that Winslow’s new field will present a spick and span appearance to birdmen who will light here in the future.

This Saturday A. R. Hipkoe’s troop will go to the field and carry on work of clearing and next Saturday Jack Lindsay’s troop will complete the work. Chas. Daze, local transfer man will donate a truck to haul away the debris as it is gathered on both days.

Famous Guide is Badly Bitten by a Gila Monster

Harry (“Indian”) Miller, proprietor of the Indian zoo and museum at Canyon Lodge, was bitten on the face early this morning by one of the gila monsters of his collection. He was rushed to Winslow for medical attention.

The reptile’s teeth were buried on each side of Mr. Miller’s nose and upper lip, and the unfortunate victim was compelled to tear the animal from his face, leaving seven gashes on his nose and face.

Dramatic Scene Marks First Day Of Murder Trial

TOMBSTONE. Ariz, Aug. 16. The first day of the trial of James Haverty, charged with murdering his brother, Richard, on April 21, came to a sensational close this evening when Mrs. Richard Haverty rushed at the man accused of slaying her husband, vigorously slapped his face, and then collapsed in the arms of friends. The incident occurred as Haverty was leaving the court room.

James Haverty is charged, with having shot his brother following an exchange of words near Ramsey Canyon about 40 miles east of here. The Haverty brothers were tor many years well known cattlemen in south eastern Arizona.
