Professional Women to Hold State Meeting in Yakima—Ten Go from Here
A lot of business men will be forced to care for their own business about Friday of this week, because a lot of business girls who have been doing a lot of business for their bosses in the local business world, are going to Yakima to attend the state meeting of the Business and Professional Woman’s club.
Cupid in the Leading-Strings of Mars—Some days ago a young woman arrived in Chicago from Louisville, Ky., whose history is thus recorded in the Post of that city:
“She gave her name as Annie Lillybridge of Detroit, and stated that her parents reside in Hamilton, Canada. Last spring she was employed in a dry goods store in Detroit, where she became acquainted with a Lieut. W—— of one of the Michigan regiments, and an intimacy immediately sprang up between them. They corresponded for some time, and became much attached to each other. Some time during last summer Lieut. W—— was appointed to a position in the 21st Michigan infantry, then rendezvouing in lonia county. The thought of parting from the gay lieutenant nearly drove her mad, and she resolved to share his dangers and be near him. No sooner had she resolved upon this course than she proceeded to the act. Purchasing male attire she visited lonia, enlisted in Capt. Kavanagh’s company, 21st regiment. While in camp she managed to keep her secret from all. Not even the object of her attachment, who met her every day, was aware of her presence so near him.
CONSTANTINOPLE—Turkish women are exhorted by the Constantinople daily, “The Republic,” not to adopt amidst all their new western practices, the Anglo-Saxon woman’s “soldierly stride.’’ The sheet devoted to women, a recent innovation of this newspaper, lays down the following rules as to the proper method of walking for the ladylike:
“Do not drag your set, but slide them gently along the pavement. Do not waddle from side to side or move your shoulders or swing your arms. Take short, dainty steps —a long stride is unlovely in women— and above all, don’t rush. Keep your eyes on a high point directly ahead of you and appear to see nothihg.”
Germans Break Up Meeting of Congress in Austria
INNSBRUCK. Austria, July14 (AP).—A meeting of a women’s congress was broken up here last evening by interruptions caused by several hundred German Nationalist students, who whistled, stamped their feet and shouted jeering remarks whenever French or English women began to speak.
A lady who gave her name as Mrs. Mary Ann Keith, of Memphis, Tennessee, was arrested in Lynchburg on Wednesday. When arrested she was rigged out in a full suit of soldiers’ clothes, and had registered her name at the Piedmont House as Lieutenant Buford. She said she had been married twice—her first husband having been a member of Sherman’s famous battery; her second was in the Southern army; but she stated she was separated from him, for some reason she did not make known. She declared she was all right on the Southern question, and scouted the idea of being a spy. She said her reason for dressing in soldier clothes was, that she had determined to fight the battles of her country, and thought such disguise more likely to enable her to accomplish her object. She was sent on to Richmond for a further hearing on Thursday morning.
