June 5, 1862 – The Vermont Cavalry

Subsequent information discloses the fact that the loss of the Vermont Cavalry during the retreat of Gen. Banks, is not so great as was at first reported. Chaplain Woodward of that Regiment writes from Williamsport, May 28,

“Our retreat from Virginia was rapid, our disasters considerable, and our escape wonderful, considering nil the circumstances. Every hour lessens our calamities by bringing in men whom we feared were hopelessly cut off. I am in hopes, when we all get in, there will not be more than 70 missing from our regiment. It occupied responsible posts, one half of it in the advance, the other half covering the retreat of the army. The regiment behaved nobly. Our new Colonel is much pleased with the Regiment, and with its conduct in the bloody retreat.”

In a letter to Adjutant General Washburn Col Tompkins writes that all the books and papers of the Regiment were lost during the retreat.
