LOS ANGELES, April 28.—Dr. William Denis Ward, head of the classical languages department of Occidental college, was confined to his bed today with a broken arm, received according to police, in an altercation with a street car conductor over a woman passenger.
The professor is said to have been knocked down by the conductor when he protested treatment of a woman passenger, who stumbled and fell as she was boarding the trolley. The conductor signalled for the car to start while the woman was mounting the steps of the car, it was said.
