Heavy Firing toward Gettysburg all Night—A General Engagement Probable—York Occupied by Meades Army in Force.

LANCASTER. Pa., Wednesday, July 1, 1863.
Signal rockets were seen and firing was heard last night at Columbia in the direction of Gettysburg, and continued till 3 o’clock this morning. At times the cannonading was rapid and heavy. The national troops occupy York in force.
Battle between Gens. Pleasanton and Stuart—The Rebels defeated—Battle between Generals Meade and Lee.
HARRISBURG, July 1-9:30 p. m.
A battle took place yesterday afternoon at Hanover Junction, between Pleasanton and the Rebel cavalry. It lasted nearly the whole afternoon. The result was that the enemy lost 400 killed, wounded and prisoners, beside six pieces of artillery. Our loss is reported at 200.
It is believed that the main body of Lee’s army is between Gettysburg and Chambersburg.
The indications are that a battle has been fought to-day between Lee and Meade, but to what extent and with what result is unknown, not is it likely to be known to-night.
Heavy firing has been heard here the whole evening in the direction of Carlisle. It is a long way off, and at times very rapid. The river banks are lined with persons listening and discussing the probable results.
