HARRISBURG, June 18.—It is stated that a body of Confederates has gone from Cumberland, Maryland, to Romney, Virginia.
The authorities are busy organizing the troops, who continue to arrive in large numbers.
The work on the rifle-pits and fortifications on the other side of the Susquehanna is still going on. Much activity there, at Camp Curtin, and everywhere else in and about the city.
MCCONNELLSBERG, PA., June 17.—Stragglers from the late fight bring information up to five o’clock p. m. yesterday from below. They report eight thousand Confederates having crossed at Williamsport, and marching on Hancock, at which point sixteen hundred of Milroy’s routed forces had been collected. These men being in a state of utter demoralization, without officers or organization, fled at the reported advance of the Confederates, and are now scattered through all parts of the country.
SHIPPENSBURG, June 17.—A gentleman direct from Chambersburg reports that the Confederates left that place this afternoon, having set fire to the warehouse of Oaks & Linn. The fire was afterwards subdued by the citizens. They retreated, it is supposed, towards Hagerstown.
The telegraphic operator is now at Chambersburg, and communication has been re-established.
HARRISBURG, June 18.—The Confederates, under Jenkins, evacuated Chambersburg at one o’clock yesterday, taking the road toward Hagerstown. The authorities here are in telegraphic communication with Chambersburg. During the stay of the Confederates there, all private property was respected, excepting so far as horses and cattle and the necessaries of life were concerned.
Jackson’s old division, under Ewell, is reported to be at Hagerstown. Information was received by the authorities late last night that Imboden was at Cumberland with two regiments of infantry and one of cavalry, with artillery. Wheeling may be their destination.
Troops for the defence of the State are arriving rapidly.
PHILADELPHIA, June 18.—It is believed there are no Confederate troops in Pennsylvania.
There is no evidence of any infantry force having been with them.
Cavalry, under Jenkins, was in Hagerstown last night.
While in Chambersburg the Confederates cleared out all the drug stores, paying in Confederate scrip. Troops are rapidly arriving. On leaving Chambersburg the Confederates took with them a number of the most prominent farmers in that section of the valley.
PHILADELPHIA, June 18.—A dispatch to the Pennsylvania Railroad from Harrisburg, dated 5 p.m. to days, says the Confederates are reported to be returning to Chambersburg from Hagerstown.
