Taken in a Year from Railway Refreshment Rooms.
When the justices on Friday made their final order authorising the opening of refreshment rooms of the new railway station at Newbury Junction, the Mayor suggested that the company might. perhaps, supply a cup of tea for twopence, the same as charged for a glass of beer.
It was stated, in reply, however, that all the great railway companies had agreed to charge threepence, to recoup themselves, in the first-class refreshment room.
The Great Western Company, it was added, annually lost 50,000 articles, which were taken away from their refreshment rooms by passengers. This was largely due to the passengers taking the cup and saucer on the train.
