LOS ANGELES, June 30—Edwin Ketcham, notorious bandit, escaped from a train that was taking him to Folsom penitentiary today, according to a telegram from G. C. Bladel, deputy sheriff in charge of the prisoner, to the sheriff’s office here.
Inspector Finds Canine Violator Crossing International Bridge.
BROWNSVILLE, Tex., June 19 (AP).—Canine rum runners have appeared. The first of the new breed was stopped on the International Bridge here Friday night with a bottle of tequila tied to his collar.
MIAMI BEACH, Fla., June 12.—Miss Svea Bohman, 27 years old, of New York, believed to have been drowned off shore here late yesterday in attempting to save an unidentified man from drowning, returned here shortly after noon today, after being rescued in the Gulf Stream.
Miss Bohman, while in the surf, responded to the cries of a man in distress almost a mile from shore near the Government Jetties.
Professional Women to Hold State Meeting in Yakima—Ten Go from Here
A lot of business men will be forced to care for their own business about Friday of this week, because a lot of business girls who have been doing a lot of business for their bosses in the local business world, are going to Yakima to attend the state meeting of the Business and Professional Woman’s club.
Three Chicago policemen, two Central Watch Service patrolmen, and a Pinkerton watchman, were arrested charged with 100 loop burglaries.
Records at police headquarters show that several of these policemen were assigned to clear up the burglaries that they had committed.
New York May 19 (A.P.)—John Goldstrom, aviator, and E. Morris Titterington, pilot and mechanician, are out to reduce Jules Verne’s famous story “Around the World in Eighty Days’’ to 31 days.
Starting today on the Mauretania, they will follow a schedule expected to put them in Moscow a few hours after they take to the air near London.
From the Soviet capital to Yokohama they will follow the quickest and most direct route, possibly by both air and rail.
Boston. June 4.—(AP)—Winter lingering in the lap of summer brought frosts and low temperatures to various parts of New England today. Killing frosts nipped tender garden crops, causing losses to gardeners and farmers in Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
While frosts were reported in central and western Massachusetts, the mercury sank dangerously near the freezing point in Vermont, Maine and New Hampshire. Ground temperatures as low as eight degrees below the freezing point were recorded in the cranberry bog region of southeastern Massachusetts.
