Immense Slaughter on Both Sides!
16,000 PRISONERS CAPTURED.
50,000 MEN KILLED AND WOUNDED:
THE VICTORY IS OURS!
BALTIMORE, July 4, 1863.
The new from Gettysburg is of the most exciting character. There has been a terrible battle, in which the slaughter was very heavy on both sides. Our soldiers met and resisted, on many occasions during Friday, double and sometimes treble their numbers. The battle closed by a complete route of the rebels. Thousands were slaughtered, and at the last assault even thousand prisoners were taken. We have now upward of sixteen thousand prisoners, and double that number have been killed and wounded.
The rebel ammunition supplies are known to be very short.
The rumor in town is fully confirmed that a courier from Jett Davis, with dispatches, had been arrested. Lee, in these dispatches, is ordered to effect an immediate retreat, as Richmond was in great danger of falling before the attack of Major-General Dix, who had invested it with an army of from thirty to forty thousand men.
General Sickles is not, as originally reported, dead. He is at Winchester, and hopes are now entertained of his ultimate recovery.
Colonel Taylor, of the Pennsylvania Bucktails, has been killed.
The Union loss is declared to be awful. The soldiers were so determined on annihilating the rebels that they plunged into the hottest fire of artillery and musketry with shouts of joy, and in return annihilated all who opposed them. On some places our dead lay in piles, and many of our officers are among the killed.
All who saw the memorable fight of July 3, say it was not only the greatest battle of this war, but of the world. Our soldiers now feel themselves entirely assured of success, and say to each other that a rebel shall never recross the Potomac.
The battle was renewed this morning (July 4,) but no particulars have yet come to hand. Large numbers of our wounded have arrived, and several thousand prisoners are en route to this city. There is very great excitement here in consequence.
